Lao Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Mr Phoukhao Phommavongsa presented his credentials to the agency's Director General Yukiya Amano on Tuesday.

At the ceremony, which took place at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna, Austria, Mr Phoukhao conveyed the warm greetings extended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Thongloun Sisoulith to Mr Amano.

Representing the Lao government and people, he expressed his thanks and gratitude to the IAEA for their cooperation in providing technical assistance to Laos through health, agriculture and other sectors.

Mr Thongloun said he hoped IAEA would continue to enhance its cooperation and technical assistance in capacity building efforts for Lao personnel in the future.

Meanwhile Mr Amano expressed his thanks and pleasure in welcoming the new Lao representative and said he hopes Laos will sign the treaties in relation to the nuclear cooperation framework, as well as signing additional protocol.

Representing the agency, Mr Armano confirmed the continued cooperation and assistance in regards to the peaceful use of atomic energy.

Both sides have agreed on closer coordination between the Lao permanent representative office and the IAEA in Vienna .

As of February this year, the IAEA has 162 member states, with Laos becoming an IAEA member state in 2011.

IAEA and Laos signed the Lao First Country Programme Framework (CPF) on May 13 for the implementation in the period of 2014-18.

CPF is a frame of reference for the medium-term planning of technical cooperation between a member state and the IAEA. It identifies priority areas where the transfer of nuclear technology and technical cooperation resources will be directed to support national development.
